National Holiday 1 December

What happened on 1 December 1640?

The 1st of December 1640 marked the end of 60 decades of Spanish occupation and the restoration of Portugal's independence.

On 1 December 1640, Portugal witnessed a crucial historical moment. The Revolt of 1640, as it came to be known, was the culmination of a series of discontents in Portugal.

The crisis of succession to the Portuguese throne, following the death of King Sebastião in 1578, led to Spanish occupation. This was the beginning of the Philippine Dynasty.

During the period of Spanish rule (1580-1640), the Portuguese population faced a series of challenges and difficulties, such as the loss of political and cultural autonomy, heavy taxes, and the constant presence of foreign authorities.

Spain's inability to resolve internal and external problems, such as the Thirty Years' War, was exploited by the Portuguese to regain their independence.

Led by the nobility and supported by a significant part of the population, the Portuguese conspired to proclaim independence on 1 December 1640. King João IV was acclaimed as the new monarch, marking the beginning of the fourth dynasty, the House of Bragança.

Curiosities about this day today

1 December is the oldest civil holiday still in force, dating back to the second half of the 19th century. It was also celebrated during the First Republic and the Estado Novo.
